Compatibility between iOS 5 and iPhone 3GS – Advantages and Disadvantages

The new Operating System from Apple, iOS 5, may or may not compatible with the iPhone 3GS, so here are some compatibility advantages and disadvantages:

Advantages: There are many iPhone 3GS owners. The terminal is available for purchase, so Apple should logically make it compatible with iOS 5. Giving iOS 5 to iPhone 3GS owners would save Apple the scandal caused by those who have recently bought the terminal and now are forced to buy a new model to run the latest version of the operating system. Giving iOS 5 for 3GS would expand the consumer base with access to new applications in the AppStore. A new operating system that runs on multiple iPhone handset models are a cause for praise for Apple and I do not think they will miss an opportunity.

Disadvantages: iOS 5 will certainly require quite potent hardware to run smoothly and the iPhone 3GS is not equipped with such hardware. RAM and CPU are 3GS's weak points and if iOS 5 will be compatible with iPhone 3GS, then it will not run smoothly at all. iPhone 3GS would also be severely limited in terms of ability to use certain iOS 5 functions. For Apple this would mean a lot of dissatisfied customers. Fragmentation is also a big problem for developers, like Rovio, creator of the famous Angry Birds, who will be forced to provide support for the old terminals, which have weak hardware.

iPhone 3GS is EOL (End of Life), which means that Apple will end its production, if they didn’t already ended it. Once the iPhone 5 will be available in stores, iPhone 3GS will not be sold anymore, and iPhone 4 will take its place. iPhone 3GS will not run iOS 5 as smoothly as iPhone 4 and iPhone 5, and you must be aware of this. The hardware will severely limit performance and probably many 3GS users will choose to keep the iOS 4 instead of installing iOS 5.
